Henry Marsh who was a 4 time Olympian and American record holder who was also an accomplished author and trainer. Marsh said “I was ingrained from a young age to be a goal-setter”. He said that he used to carry around this saying that his grandfather told him: “You can accomplish anything of a righteous nature if you have the faith and desire and are willing to do the work.”
Henry set out to do just that. For example before he ran a race he would visually see it in his mind over and over again. He would see the end result and he’s pick up on the things he saw, like when he visited the track before he ran it.
Then in 1988 Marsh came down with a case of pneumonia and the timing was terrible, so there was real fear of not being able to make the U.S. Olympic team. At the time, he knew he had to finish 6th in his next race to make it to the finals. During that race he was knocked down and when he fell down another runner ran over his hand and the spikes cut into his hand. He was far behind but he got up and ran as if he was possessed – and made 6th place.
What makes people do these amazing things? The technique Henry was using is called Visualization but you don’t have to be an athlete to achieve your goals no matter how far away they seem from where you are right now. You just have to know what you want and be able to really see yourself doing it.
Getting Started with Visualization
Take time and meditate: This may seem ridiculous or pointless, but try it: think about being on your deathbed and if you were to be happy, what would it be that you wished you accomplished?
Write it down: Study after study shows that writing down your goals increases your chances of achieving them. Focus on your goal and then break it into smaller achievable milestones. For example, if you want to build an extended part of your home, you’ll break it into mini projects and create a budget while saving for it while you talk to contractors and get estimates. You’ll be doing this while you visualize what goes into it like the paint and the furnishings. Or maybe you want to write a book. Start by focusing on what the title is and the chapters are. Create the outline first. You can do these things while looking for a publisher.
Get focused and organized: Buy yourself a new notebook and organizer. Write down your to-do lists and all the data that comes with getting you to your goal. You’ll want to keep a record of people, events, motivational articles, anything that will help you get to your goals.
Keep your goal alive: Remind yourself everyday what it is.
No goal is beyond your reach when you can see it and believe it to be true in your Mind’s eye.
